51 mighty cyclists signed in for another great night of cycling on 7/21.  All were in splendid moods and were ready to ride and sweat.

All riders returned safely with just a couple issues reported.  We had a rider go down (not serious, just scary) and another rider crossing the center line after a pull.  We don’t own the road, so keep the pacelines tight and stay on the right side of the yellow lines.

Bottom line, let's be safe out there.

    7/21 Reported Speeds:

Hot 1:            24.0 - "Hot Ben and Chris"

    Hot 2:            22.8

    Extra Spicy:  20.7

    Spicy Plus:    18.6

    Spicy:             16.2

GLR:               16.2  - John Galdeen had no GLR riders so he tagged along with the Spicy Group

Thursday's Ride on 7/28 looks to be a bit challenging.  Winds will be out of the WSW at 13mph with gusts to 20mph.  Probability of rain is 40% with mostly cloudy skies and "a thunderstorm in parts of the area" according to Accuweather.

I'll be watching the weather closely on Thursday and will make a call between 4:30 -5pm.  IF, we have to cancel, notices will be posted on the following sites in this order:

    1. TAB official website:  https://www.toledoareabicyclists.org/
    2. TAB Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/Toledo-Area-Bicyclists-103586757898770

It is also a good time to start thinking about equipping your bike with lights if you have not done so already.  The days are, unfortunately, getting shorter and we want to be as visible as possible at the end of our rides as we are starting to conclude our rides at dusk.

It's always a good time to double check your gear.  Make sure that you have a spare tube and the accessories to change a flat.

Rides, average speeds and ride leaders are listed below:

    Group 1 (Hot1) - Avg: 20-23+mph, 26 mi:    Phil Carroll

Group 2 (Hot2) - Avg: Less hot than Hot1 26 mi:   Tim Eckel

Group 3 (Xtra Spicy) - Avg: 19-21 mph, 26 mi:  Tim Prand

Group 4 (Spicy Plus) - Avg: 18-19.5 mph, 26 mi:  We need a Leader

Group 5 (Spicy) - Avg: 16-18 mph, 24 mi:  Mark Maxwell

Despite the dire predictions of bad weather Mother Nature decided to bless this area with beautiful albeit breezy conditions. David Justin Barret came out to help and we battled a steady 20 mph westerly wind, moving ever closer to that sweet, sweet tailwind. Looking back we seemed to make short work of it.

I thank David for coming out because I was still sore from the previous day and I was not looking forward to battling solo. We averaged 15.4 I think while enjoying some shady cloud cover.

    Speedtrap Ride Tuesday July 26th

              Hardy Cyclists:

The Speedtrap Ride will hold its next chapter tomorrow, Tuesday, July 26th.

All cyclists will ride out from Spoke Life Cycles in Elmore, Ohio, at 6:30 pm.

The Ghost Pepper Riders will ride out with perennial Speedtrap leader and Ironman Triathlon veteran Scott Lang! His group will likely average 22 – 23+ mph. Are you up to the challenge!

Bob Kayden, also an all around athlete(running, water skiing) will lead the Cayenne Pepper Riders at 21+ mph.

Doug Kilpatrick will take out his Habanero Riders at 20+ mph.

Joe Peltier(TAB 5fer Ride “El Capitan”) will be the guest and substitute leader for the Jalapeno Riders at 16 – 19 mph.

Those who would like to ride at a more casual pace will form the Sweet Pepper Riders and ride a slightly shorter 22-mile course.

The weather should be very favorable for riding: a temperature in the upper 70s, partly cloudy skies, and a SSW wind of only 5 mph.

The Speedtrap Ride is both a Flatlanders and a TAB ride. It’s a nice opportunity to ride with cyclists from another group. There will likely be a gathering of cyclists after the ride for drink and good conversation. So come out to Elmore and be part of the fun. Sign-in begins at 6:00 in front of the bike shop.

I hope to see you then!

TAB Monday Whitehouse ride for 7/25 will start across from Cycle Werks at 6:30. There will be 2 or 3 groups depending on how many show up. Groups will roll at 15-17, 18-20 and 20+. If there are not enough we will combine the 2 faster groups at 19-21. Hope to see you there.

  • 07/20/2022 11:05 PM | Anonymous

We will start in Whitehouse by CycleWerks and head south and then towards Waterville. We will cross the river and head to Grand Rapids on the south side of the river. It is going to be hilly and we will regroup after each set of hills. We will make a QUICK stop in Grand Rapids and then head to Liberty Centre where we will stop for a break at Grandma's Kitchen. Then it is east back to Whitehouse for about 48 miles.

The rolling pace will be 18 to 20. Final average between 16 and 18 mph.

Should be in the mid 70s to start climbing quickly into 80s quickly so be sure to bring hydration! As of today there is a 50% change of scattered thunder storms but that will change at least 3 times between now and then.

    Hope to see you there!

Well, we are back to our normally routine.

TAB's Meandering Ride departs Whitehouse this Saturday, July 23rd at 8a for a 44-mile round trip ride to Wauseon! We target an average of 13-15mph over the whole route, but adjust the pace to suit the group that shows up to ride with us. Hydration and a snack are a must have for the jaunt to the West with Roger and I this week! We hope you can join us!!

Speedtrap Ride Tuesday, July 19th recap

The Speedtrap Ride, the best Tuesday night ride out of Ottawa County, saw thirty-three riders come to Elmore last night for a great bicycle ride.

Scott Lang was back in good form and led the Ghost Pepper Riders to a 23.1 mph average.

Bob Kayden led a combined Cayenne Pepper/Habanero Rider group to a 21.0 mph average.

The nine Jalapeno Riders rode to an 18.9 mph average as reported by leader Todd Pollock.

There were three Sweet Pepper Riders. Claude Watkins from that group reported 15.3 mph.

Becky Kayden and Audrey Schnabel formed the Good Looking Pepper Riders and rode down the North Coast Inland Trail and back for a total of 13.15 miles at 9.63 mph.

Two riders in addition to the thirty-three were Charlene and Tom Saunders, who may become the trike contingent of the Speedtrap Ride. They also rode down the trail and back, and are pictured.

Pictured also are Kendra and Phil Carroll. It was Kendra’s first Speedtrap Ride. Welcome Kendra!

Tim Michaels rode his last ride with his current cycling shoes. He is pictured with his practically shredded shoe. He bought new shoes before going home.

Todd Pollock provided the picture of Jalapeno Riders on the road. Thank you Todd!

Please join us next Tuesday for the next great chapter in the Speedtrap Ride. With a temperature in the low 80s and SSW winds if 6 mph, it will be another memorable ride. I hope to see you then!

    Hey ridaz:

First time I have had to do this but no ride tonight. I hope you got your miles in earlier but I don't want to risk riding into a pop up storm tonight.

Enjoy a quality beverage and that special bio pic that you've been saving on Netflix for just such an occasion! Or you could clean your bike...
