    Good Day,

61 intrepid and excited riders showed up on a warm and breezy evening.  It was nothing short of a great start to the Thursday evening series.

We kept the rubber side down and all riders returned safely.  There were a couple of minor issues.  One flat reported from the Spicy Plus group.  All the elder statesmen of the group "advised" and "enlightened" a newer rider on the basics of a roadside tire repair.  There was also a wheel issue reported from "Spicy" group.

We did a good job of "taking care of our own" on this first night of the season.  Let's keep doing this for every ride this season.

Many thanks to our ride leaders and I look forward to many successful and safe rides this summer.

    Reported Speeds:

    Hot 1:  24.0

    Hot 2: 22.4

    Extra Spicy: 20.6

    Spicy Plus: 18.3

    Spicy: 16.4

    GLR: 14.4

    Regards,

    Joe "El Capitan" Peltier

    Speedtrap Ride Tuesday, May 17th

Once again the Speedtrap Ride, one of America’s great Tuesday night rides, will depart from Spoke Life Cycles in Elmore, Ohio, at 6:30 pm tomorrow, Tuesday, May 17th. At ride time the temperature will be about 70 degrees, with a NW wind of 10mph. There will be practically no chance of precipitation.

There will be five groups riding out on a 25-mile course[22 miles for the slower groups].

Scott Lang will lead the Ghost Pepper Riders and will likely average close to 22 mph. Are you up to the challenge?!!!!!

Bob Kayden will take out the Cayenne Pepper Riders at a slightly slower pace, 20 – 21 mph.

Doug Kilpatrick will lead the Habanero Riders at 19 – 20 mph/

Todd Pollock will ride out with his Jalapeno Riders and expects to average anywhere from 16 – 19 mph.

I will ride out with anyone who would like to ride at a very casual pace, especially since it’s early in the season.

Several riders may gather for drink and good conversation after the ride.

Please join us for all the fun. Sign-in begins at 6:00 in front of the bike shop, and we roll out at 6:30 sharp. I hope to see you then!

This Wednesday 5/18 is We Are Traffic's 13th Annual Toledo Ride of Silence from the University of Toledo. The Ride of Silence is a ride remembering and honoring those injured or killed on their bicycle and to bring greater awareness to cyclist's right to use the roadway.

As is our tradition, TAB is sponsoring a group ride to the start of the ride. We plan to leave at 6:00 from Tam 'O Shanter (at 7060 W Sylvania Ave, Sylvania OH). We’ll meet in the back parking lot and ride at a slow to moderate pace up the University Parks Trail to the University in time for the start of the Ride of Silence. After the Ride of Silence we will regroup and ride back together to Tam 'O. We are usually chasing the sun on the ride back so bring lights! Also, if you have TAB gear please wear it to show are support of We Are Traffic.

If you can't make it to our group ride, take the time to attend if possible. Details are at:

We had quite a good turnout the hot weather last Windsday. While not an exact count, Edgar’s A group had about 10 high speed riders averaging 22. My B/C group was pretty good sized at around 15-16 riders. We were less enthusiastic than last week at a solid 18.4. Still pretty good for this early in the season. And Kelly Trame also had a good sized C/D group of about 7-10 riders who had a sweet evening in the country.

    2 things here:

    1) The ride still needs regular leaders for the B & C groups, since I’m finished at the end of the month. And a Kelly wants an co-leader for her group. This is your club, come out and support the ride by helping to lead!

    2) The Ride of Silence, remembering and honoring those injured or killed on their bicycle and bring greater awareness to cyclist's right to use the roadway, is this Weds 5/18/22. There will be no Windsday Ride, instead we will ride to the ride of silence from Tam ‘O Shanter in Sylvania. Details will follow. It you can’t ride with us, please try to attend the ride. Every Sunday there will be a different off road ride scheduled at 8 am. The goal is to offer some additional ride options that take us off the beaten path and allow the riders opportunities to enjoy a little “dirt” therapy. Check the weekly calendar and this page for the start locations and routes. This Sunday May 15th will be the Towpath 2 and starts from the Azul tequila restaurant at 610 E Riverview Rd Napoleon Oh. Come join us for some off road fun for all riders!

Speedtrap Ride Tuesday, May 10th recap

Nearly perfect riding weather brought twenty-eight cyclists to Elmore Tuesday evening for the first ride of the 2022 Speedtrap Ride season. The temperature hovered around 80 degrees with a very slight southeast wind.

Scott Lang led the Ghost Pepper Riders and reported a riding average of 22 mph.

Bob Kayden led 5five Cayenne Pepper Riders to a 20.9 mph average.

Doug Kilpatrick led his Habanero Riders and reported a 19.5 mph average

Todd Pollock reported a riding average of 16.1 mph for the Jalapeno Riders. Ralph Carter of that group suffered a fall as a result of a flat tire, but ended up with a only scraped knee and foot. No medical emergency was necessary, and no other rider was involved.

Claude Watkins, Andy Gundlach and I formed the Sweet Pepper Riders. We rode at a very casual pace for the first ride of the season.

There were three riders new to the Speedtrap Ride: Jason Kiddey(red and black jersey), Shane Grennan(standing in his truck), and Andrew Gundlach(green shirt) Andy is a veteran rider. He has been off the bike for several years, but plans to move up to faster groups as the season progresses Welcome all to the Speedtrap Ride!

Several riders gathered in front of the bike shop after the ride for good conversation.

The next installment of the Speedtrap Ride will take place next Tuesday, May 17th. The weather will not be quite as warm with a high temperature of 70 degrees, and there will be a NW wind of about 10 mph. Sign-in begins at 6:00 in front of the bike shop and we roll out at 6:30 pm. I hope to see you then!

TO ALL MEMBERS OF THE TOLEDO AREA BICYCLISTS:

IMPORTANT MESSAGE: RIDE LEADERS STILL NEEDED

The warm weather riding season has begun, but your club still needs ride leaders for the following rides:

    • 1.    The Sunday morning ride out of Wildwood Preserve Metropark
    •
    • 2.    The Sunday 1:00 Getaway Ride
    •
    • 3.    The Monday Whitehouse Ride C group to fill in for Dave Burkett until he can return
    •
    • 4.    The Windsday at Timberstone Ride Fast and Reliable Group

And..  someone to oversee the entire Windsday Ride

    • 5.      5fer Thursday Hot 1 group

If you have been a regular rider on any of these rides, please consider volunteering as a group ride leader. Get someone to co-lead with you so that neither of you has to come every week.

If you want these rides to continue, someone will have to step up to lead. I hope to hear from you soon!

The start of the Old 24 Ride season went off without a hitch (even though the ride leader forgot The Clipboard). 10 riders came out to ride the 28.5 mile scenic route down Old 24. Warmer temperatures and thinner air equals faster speed (oh and a little less wind helps also). We rolled in with an average of 21.0 mph according to my Strava data. Thanks to the 9 riders for coming out to ride with me. You all rotated smoothly and worked together up both overpasses to keep our lines nice and even. I love when a plan comes together.  See you next week on Old 24.

This Saturdays Adventure ride will roll out of Whitehouse, across from Cycle Werks, at 8am. The winds will be out of the south and with that being said we will be riding to BG. We will be stopping mid way at a Circle K for a brief break and refill of beverages. Pace will 18ish depending on the group. Weather should be fantastic. I am looking forward to a great ride with you all.
