Speedtrap Ride Tuesday, May 14^th recap

          Twenty-nine riders came to Elmore this past Tuesday, May 14^th, for a very pleasant Speedtrap Ride.

          Veteran Flatlander and triathlete Scott Lang led the Ghost Pepper Riders on a 25-mile ride and reported a riding average of 21.2 mph

          Tony Mazurek made his debut appearance as leader of the Habaneros. His group rode the same 25-mile course and had a 19.7 mph riding average.

          I led six other Jalapeno Riders. We stayed pretty much together over the 22-mile course and had a 16.1 mph average.

          Marnie Arndt and two other riders formed the Sweet Pepper Riders. They rode 20 miles at 13.7 mph.

          Although there was a slight headwind on the first leg of the ride down Portage River South Road, temperatures were in the 60s, and once riders turned around onto SR 105, they experienced a very pleasant tailwind for most of the rest of the ride. It was sweet!

          Joining us for his first Speedtrap Ride was John Cheung. He rode in the Sweet Pepper Group.  Welcome John!

          This was also a special night for veteran Flatlander Dave Stover. He rode with the Jalapeno Riders, and it was his first ride since his Achilles tendon injury. Welcome back Dave! Dave's picture is above.

          After the ride, several riders gathered at the Portage Inn in Elmore for food, drink, and good conversation.

The Old 24 Ride had 17 riders this week. this beats last years record by 3 riders.  The weather was warm and the winds were light.  With these conditions and so many rides, we no doubt were going to have a high average speed. We started out not pushing too hard and climbed our first overpass with two lines of riders staying even with each other.  It was pretty neat to watch the steady lines climb at the same pace. I thought the wind would slow us down a bit heading out Old 24 but the winds were light and the riders strong. The group stayed together, rotated often, and finished with a 19.4 mph average.

REMINDER - Wednesday night’s Ride to the Ride leaves at 6:00 from Tam O Shanter. WINDSDAY FROM TIMBERSTONE IS CANCELED and will return next week.

Tomorrow is the Old 24 Breakaway ride. The weather looks fantastic. Temps will be in the mid 60's with some wind out of the North West. Last week we averaged 17.8 mph in some pretty tough conditions.  This week we will move this average up to somewhere around 18.5 mph. Again we are going to stay on the low side of our 18 to 20 average through May.

We will be heading out from Cyclewerks in Whitehouse at 6:30 for a 28.6 mile loop out to Old 24 and heading north on County Road 3. Come on out and enjoy the fun.

This Wednesday is the 10th Annual Ride of Silence (ROS) in Toledo starting from the University of Toledo. The ride commemorates those who have been killed in car crashes while riding. TAB is one of supporters of the ride.

As is our custom, I'm canceling the Windsday ride so we can ride as a group to the Ride of Silence. We will meet 6:00 at Tam O Shanter, 7060 W Sylvania Ave, Sylvania, OH, in the back parking lot. We'll leave the lot by 6:10 to ride up the University Parks Trail to the start of the ROS. The trip is a little over 6 miles at a reasonable pace 15-17 mph. 10 minutes after the ride, we 'll gather to ride back to Tam O Shanter before dark.

If you have TAB kit, please wear it to show TAB’s support of the ride. Helmets are mandatory; front and rear lights are suggested. The roads for the ROS can be a bit rough & tough, so you may not want to bring your best bike to the ride. If you can’t join us for the ride in, please try to attend to the ROS, and show your support for this important event.

Speedtrap Ride Tuesday May 14^th

          The Speedtrap Ride will once again roll out from Spoke Life Cycles/Elmore (formerly Elmore Cycling and Fitness) tomorrow, Tuesday, May 14^th.

The high temperature is predicted to be in the mid 60s with some sunny skies and winds 5 to 10 mph. That’s considerably better than what we experienced last week.

Scott Lang will once again lead the Ghost Pepper Riders on a 25-mile course. His group will likely average 20 – 22 mph. Are you ready?!

Tony Mazurek will lead the Habaneros over the same course and will likely average 18 – 20 mph.

I will lead the Jalapenos over a slightly shorter 22-mile course. We hope to average 16 mph.

Marnie Arndt will be there to lead the Sweet Pepper Riders over a course and at a speed comfortable for those in her group.

With the weather predicted to be favorable, why not come out to Elmore and see why the Speedtrap Ride is the best Tuesday night ride out of Ottawa County. You’ll ride some quiet country roads and meet some great people, too.

After the ride, some riders will likely gather at the Portage Inn in Elmore for food, drink, and good conversation.

Sign-in begins at 6:00, and we ride at 6:30. I hope to see you then!

Chilly winds and bright sun greeted us for our spin down to Pemberville. At one point in the ride we had 11 riders with us, but with other duties for the day Rick Metcalf and Tyler Smith turned back, and Ron Schieb just wasn’t feeling it. That left us us with core group of 8 to make it to the Harrison Park for our break. We took a spin south along the Portage River to enjoy the view with the winds at our back. Then a turn to the north and west, alternately fighting the wind and enjoying the tail wind back to the Perrysburg to call it a morning. 

Join Debbie Tassie at 8:00 at Wildwood Park for a ride to the Wing Station for a great breakfast. Maybe spring weather will have come by then!

Al Frishman is a TAB member and our annual high-mileage rider for several years now. Congratulations Al!

This week’s Adventure Ride takes us to the village of Pemberville. We’ll meet at 8:00 in the parking lot behind the Perrysburg YMCA, 13415 Eckel Junction Rd, Perrysburg OH for a jaunt southward to Pemberville OH. We’ll have a snack stop at William Henry Harrison Park at mile 20. Then we can cruise along the Portage River for a bit before we head back north to the YMCA for a total of 46 miles. Snacks and drinks will be available at the IGA in Pemberville if you need them (no breakfast stop this trip). The weather promises to be cool and breezy with temps in the high 40’s to low 50’s and winds out of the ENE, so dress warm! Hope to see you there.

5fer Mojo: 2 Local Forecasts: 0. Two weeks running the forecasters said we would be washed out, yet we had great rides both times. While last week was completely dry, tonight we had light rain starting at mile 3 and ending by mile 4.5. Just enough to get us wet but not soaked.

32 cyclists knew the 5fer mojo would cut through the gloomy forecast to enable a fantastic ride and they were not disappointed. I forgot to get a photo, help me remember at next week’s gathering of the cool kids. We did 4 groups tonight. Reported averages were: Hot 1 22.6, Hot 2 21.6, Spicy Combo 18.4 and GLR 11.5
