With everyone down at Horsey this weekend, I thought we’d do a bit of horsin’ around ourselves this Saturday. We’re going to Liberty Center, but we’re noodling over back roads all the way. We do have short stretch on Old 24, but not enough to take away from the Memorial 100 experience. Mileage is just under 50 mi, and I’d like to see 17 average. Weather? It’s too far out to be accurate, but strong winds and warm temps are predicted for the morning.

We leave from Keener Park, just south of Monclova Rd on Keener (4700 Keener Rd for you who GPS), 8:00 sharp. Arrive early, be ready to ride and enjoy the company. See you there

What a difference a day can make. Today - 55 and cloudy, tomorrow - 75 and partly sunny. Stay home tonight and ride tomorrow. You can come join our crew tomorrow for a ride in the warm, the way it should be! And remember, we have a new 4th group, the Relaxed group for those who prefer a more comfortable ride. Target speeds in the 15ish range depending on the riders. Come on out and join Edgar, Jen, super sub Ron, and a mystery ride leader – so mysterious that even they don’t know who they are! We leave promptly at 6:30 from Timberstone Jr HS 9000 W. Sylvania Ave in Sylvania. Arrive early, be ready to ride and enjoy the warm.

Come join me tomorrow for the Old 24 Breakaway ride tomorrow.  The weather should be decent for us, looks like 61 degrees with East wind of 10.

We will be heading out from Cyclewerks in Whitehouse at 6:30 for a 28.6 mile loop out to Old 24 and heading north on County Road 3. Come on out and enjoy the fun.

    See you on Old 24.

Cyclewerks, along with the Wheelmen Racing and Team Toledo Triathlon Club, presented us with a unique opportunity on Saturday afternoon. Rolf Dietrich, the brains behind the paired spoke Rolf wheelsets that many of us ride, spent some time with us at the Cyclewerks Whitehouse location, signing wheels and shirts and even went out and rode a circuit of the Wabash with us. It was a great afternoon for a ride!

Thank you to Cyclewerks for giving us that opportunity!

TLDR: 5 Riders, Swamp crossing, Hubert took a bath, I had a flat, great coffee at the Red Rambler, uneventful ride back to Oak Openings (avoiding the swamp). Next Intro to Gravel is back at Original Gravity in Milan, MI on June 1st.

I awoke at 3am to the sound of rain on my awning. I hadn't planned on wearing rain gear when I set my kit out the night before. Mother nature throws curve balls sometimes, and learning to hit them is part of the fun. The unpaved section of the Wabash was going to be a little soft. My fat bike was still a dirty from the last time I rode it (Brighton Rec in March?), so it was going to need a bath anyway.

I took off from home at 6:30am during a chilly bout of rain. There is hardly a better time to ride than early on a Saturday morning. The streets were empty and by the time I passed through Maumee the rain had stopped. It was just me, the birds, a few chipmunks and squirrels, and eventually the sun, all the way to Oak Openings.

When I arrived at the Springbrook parking lot, Rick and Hubert were waiting for Jody. They planned on going out a little early. I rode up ahead to check trail conditions. Wet, firm, with a few puddles, no problem for four inch tires. Rick, Hubert, and Jody took off and I waited to see who else would ride.

At 9am, it was just Chris and I, so we chased down Rick and crew, catching them just after the Fraker Mill Bridge. Things were going swimmingly until we crossed 109. That's when the real fun began. We started to encounter ankle deep puddles and areas where the grass was a foot or more tall. About a quarter mile from the railroad crossing, the puddles were getting larger and deeper. The final "puddle" looked to be about a hundred yards long. The thing about murky water is that you don't know how deep it is until you're in it. I've seen videos of gravel races with creek crossings and the like and thought, what the hell, let's do this. I said to Chris "I'm going for it. This might be a mistake, but I'm going for it." And so we rode through it, water over the bottom bracket and all. I found out that Showers Pass socks are indeed waterproof. Chris made it all the way to the end without putting a foot down, only to have his front wheel get stuck in the last few inches and putting his right foot down deep into swamp muck.

After this, it was smooth sailing to Wauseon. Kind of. On the way north to the Red Rambler, I noticed my front tire was self steering like crazy and getting bouncy. Something in the swamp had poked through. I picked a hell of a time to find out my sealant was dried up. I was riding nearly on the rim by the time we got to the Red Rambler. I added some sealant and air and the small puncture sealed without an issue. It was time for coffee and pastries. Man, they have good coffee. The espresso brownie bites were great also. I highly recommend making this a stop on any ride through Wauseon. Just try to arrive cleaner than we did. And maybe don't work on your bike out front.

On the way back we caught back up to Rick and company, finding out that Hubert had taken a bath in the swamp. Somehow their bikes were way cleaner than mine and Chris's. Needless to say we avoided the swamp on the way back and strolled into Oak Openings without incident.

Thanks to everyone who came out. The next Intro to Gravel ride is on June 1st, back to Original Gravity to take on Bethel Church Road. This is one of my favorite routes, a route that was put together by Mike Meiser and predates my cycling career.

    Speedtrap Ride Tuesday, May 21st

The Speedtrap Ride, the best Tuesday night ride out of Ottawa County, will roll out again tomorrow, Tuesday, May 21st, from Spoke Life Cycles/Elmore at 6:30 pm.

Scott Lang will once again lead the Ghost Pepper Riders on a 25-mile ride and will likely average 21 – 22 mph. Are you ready for the challenge?!

Tony Mazurek will lead the Habaneros over the same course. His group expects to average 19 – 20 mph.

I will lead the Jalapeno Riders on a slightly shorter 22-mile ride. Last week we topped 16 mph. Can we improve this week?

Marnie Arndt will be on hand to lead the Sweet Pepper Riders over a course and at a speed comfortable for those in her group.

The high temperature is predicted to be 61 degrees, with ENE winds at 5 to 10 mph – not quite as nice as last week, but it will still be a fun ride!

After the ride, many may gather, as usual, at the Portage Inn in Elmore, for food, drink, and good conversation.

As you can see, there is something for everyone! Come on out to Elmore, ride some lightly travelled roads, and meet some great people, too!

Sign-in begins at 6:00, and we ride at 6:30. I hope to see you then!

Speedtrap Ride Tuesday, May 14th recap

Twenty-nine riders came to Elmore this past Tuesday, May 14th, for a very pleasant Speedtrap Ride.

Veteran Flatlander and triathlete Scott Lang led the Ghost Pepper Riders on a 25-mile ride and reported a riding average of 21.2 mph

Tony Mazurek made his debut appearance as leader of the Habaneros. His group rode the same 25-mile course and had a 19.7 mph riding average.

I led six other Jalapeno Riders. We stayed pretty much together over the 22-mile course and had a 16.1 mph average.

Marnie Arndt and two other riders formed the Sweet Pepper Riders. They rode 20 miles at 13.7 mph.

Although there was a slight headwind on the first leg of the ride down Portage River South Road, temperatures were in the 60s, and once riders turned around onto SR 105, they experienced a very pleasant tailwind for most of the rest of the ride. It was sweet!

Joining us for his first Speedtrap Ride was John Cheung. He rode in the Sweet Pepper Group.  Welcome John!

This was also a special night for veteran Flatlander Dave Stover. He rode with the Jalapeno Riders, and it was his first ride since his Achilles tendon injury. Welcome back Dave! Dave's picture is above.

(There was supposed to be a picture of John Cheung, but it didn’t come out. I will get his next time.)

After the ride, several riders gathered at the Portage Inn in Elmore for food, drink, and good conversation.

Please join us next Tuesday, May 21st, for the next chapter of the Speedtrap Ride. We roll out from Spoke Life Cycles/Elmore at 6:30 pm. I hope to see you then.
