Speedtrap Ride Tuesday May 7th recap

With the threat and prediction of severe thunderstorms and a tornado watch, only seventeen hardy cyclists came to Elmore on Tuesday for the first official Speedtrap Ride of 2024.

The regular groups did not ride out as usual. Most riders were from the Ghost Pepper Group, and those that did ride left early to hopefully beat the rain. Riding averages from 21.5 to 22.5 mph were reported.

Hubert Backes and perhaps three others formed a slightly slower group. No report from that group.

All riders returned to Elmore safely and reported only a few drops of rain. No real severe weather passed through Elmore.

Pictured is Tim Michael’s Uncle Greg Smith, visiting from Alabama,  on his first Speedtrap Ride. Welcome Greg!

Doug Metzger provided the picture of yours truly! Thank you Doug!

After the ride, several gathered in the bike shop for a feast of pulled pork plus other treats, and to celebrate Nicole Reece’s birthday. Happy Birthday Nicole!

The next chapter of the Speedtrap Ride will take place this coming Tuesday, May 14th. The long-range forecast calls for rain, but we’ll have to wait and see!

    Perhaps I’ll see you then.

This week’s Adventure Ride has us traveling W and S from Secor Park to visit beautiful downtown Swanton before arriving at Delta for our rest break. After that we’ll sweep NE back to Secor.

Meet us this Saturday, at Secor Park, 8:00. As usual, it's 18-20 rolling speed, but we will adjust for the group. This is a no drop ride. The weather says a good chance of rain so check back in case of a cancellation.

CANCELLED due to weather.... sorry everyone!!

Weather doesn't look too promising, but in case the forecast changes the Meanderer's will roll this Saturday, May 11th out of Whitehouse at 8a. Meet up in the parking lot across from Cycle Werks so that we can adventure out for a 27-mile loop that runs through the Oaks and out to the Fraker Mill Covered Bridge. Bring hydration and a snack for our rest stop break. Meanderer's meander so you can expect rolling speeds of up to 15-17mph, but this is a NO DROP ride that will only go as fast as 100% of the attendees can manage. Check back here to confirm if we've had to cancel or if we are rolling!

Also, don't miss out on your chance to get your Hubert T-shirt. Here's the link in case you lost it!! https://www.toledoareabicyclists.org/Hubert-T-shirt

    Speedtrap Ride Tuesday May 7th

The Speedtrap Ride kicks off the official 2024 season with its first ride tomorrow, Tuesday, May 7th, at 6:30 pm from Spoke Life Cycles in Elmore, Ohio.

There will be five groups riding out.

Scott Lang will lead the Ghost Pepper Riders over a 25-mile course with a riding average of 22 to 23+ mph.

John Del Toro will take out the Cayenne Pepper Riders at a slightly slower pace(maybe) 21+ mph. John is pictured with wife Michelle. Bob Kayden has retired as Cayenne Pepper Leader. Thank you Bob for all your years of leading.

Ken South will lead the Habanero Riders at 20 mph

Andy Gundlach and Ken Shaw will be co-leaders for the Jalapeno Riders at 17 – 19 mph.  Todd Pollock has retired as Jalapeno Leader. Thank you Todd for all your years of leading.

I will be there to guide anyone wishing to ride at a casual pace.

Some averages may be higher for those who have been riding all winter, and some averages may be lower for those just beginning their season.

The weather forecast calls for a temperature in the low 70s at ride time. However, there is a 70% chance of thunderstorms.

After the ride, there will be a barbecue meal to celebrate the start of the season. If you plan to attend, please bring a side dish to share. If there is no ride because of rain, the barbecue meal will still take place.

Sign-in for the ride begins at 6:00 pm. I hope to see you then.

The Meanderer's roll this Saturday, May 4th from Ottawa Park at 8a. Meet up in the parking lot by the police museum so that we can adventure out for a 27-mile urban Tour de Toledo (route courtesy of the The Commuter Project Toledo & B Team Bike Club) which will include places like Wildwood, Olander, Sylvania, McGregor, and the Chessie Circle Trail (there are some pretty sweet murals too). Bring hydration and a snack for our rest stop break. Meanderer's meander so you can expect rolling speeds of up to 15-17mph, but I expect the ride overall to be slower than normal because of all the stopping and going that is associated with an in-town adventure. This is a NO DROP ride that will only go as fast as 100% of the attendees can manage. We hope you come out and try something new with us this week!!

If the route looks familiar, it should. We just reversed last week's route. Why waste a perfectly good route? We’ll roll out of Whitehouse, across the street from Cycle Werks, at 8:00. Our route will take us N and W and by the Field of Dreams drive-in as we head S to Liberty Ctr for a brief stop at Grandma’s. Then it's E through Texas before we head NE to Whitehouse. Possibility of damp roads, but things should dry out, and the current prediction is low NE winds.

As usual, it's 18-20 rolling speed, but we will adjust for the group. This is a no drop ride. Be sure to come and join us!
