Speedtrap Ride Tuesday July 12th recap

              Greetings to all,

The Steadfast Speedtrip Riders numbered twenty-nine out of Elmore this past Tuesday, July 12th. All took advantages of sunny skies, and a west wind making a nice tailwind for the return ride to Elmore.

The Ghost Pepper Riders split into three groups while out on the road. One group reported an average of 24.4 mph; the second group 23.9 mph, and the third group 21.6 mph.  Bob Kayden and his Cayenne Pepper Riders rode to a 21.4 mph average. Doug Kilpatrick would have been the sole Habanero Rider, so he rode with the Cayenne Pepper Riders.

Todd Pollock led a group of Jalapeno Riders and reported 18.2 mph. Claude Watkins reported 15.4 mph for the Sweet Pepper Riders.

Welcome back to the Speedtrap Ride to Ron and Joyce Purk! Since they hadn’t been riding for a while, John Galdeen[TAB 5fer Thursday GLR leader] guided them through the ride. Joyce reported 12.8 mph.

Pictured are Ron and Joyce Purk, with John Galdeen. Also pictured is Doug Kilpatrick, a man of many hats: Habanero Ride Leader, TAB 5fer Thursday Extra Spicy Ride Leader, sometimes TAB Saturday Adventure Ride Leader, Bike Specialist at Spoke Life Cycles Elmore, TAB president, and family man! Whew!

The last picture was provided by Todd Pollock! Thank you Todd! He captured the Jalapeno group tackling Alpe d’Elmore, the longest and highest climb on the Speedtrap route that traverses the entire width of the Ohio Turnpike.

The weather for next Tuesday calls for mostly sunny skies, a SW wind of 13 mph, and a high of 90 degrees! It looks to be a great summer ride! Please join us!

76 mighty riders showed up for another great night of cycling on 7/7.  Attitudes were great and we had a couple of guest speakers.

Doug Kilpatrick spoke regarding the Freedom Ride from 7/4 and that he was still taking donations.

Linda Posadny reminded us that the Mad Anthony River Rally (MARR) is fast approaching.  Volunteers are needed as well as riders.  This really is a great event and I think the beer garden is returning this year.  If you can ride, great, If you can volunteer, that would be even better.  These organized rides don't just happen.  They require a fair amount of hours to set up, run and break down.  So please, if you can, give some time and effort to make this another great event sponsored by TAB.

All our rides went off without a hitch.  All riders returned safely with visions of their next ride already dancing in their heads.

    7/7 Reported Speeds:

    Hot 1:            25 - Really Hot!

    Hot 2:            22.9

    Extra Spicy:  22.0

    Spicy Plus:    18.7

    Spicy:             16.4

    GLR:               15.0 on a 22 mile route

The upcoming ride for Thursday, 7/14 is shaping up to be another great opportunity to ride.  The weather looks to be outstanding with a predicted high of 80 and dry with winds out of the East at 7 mph gusting to 9 mph.  But, remember, it's only Tuesday and we are in Ohio where the weather seems to be constantly changing.

Rides, average speeds and ride leaders are listed below:

    Group 1 (Hot1) - Avg: 20-23+mph, 26 mi:    Phil Carroll

    Speedtrap Ride Tuesday July 12th

The Speedtrap Ride, one of America’s great Tuesday night rides, will roll out once again tomorrow, Tuesday, July 12th, at 6:30 pm from Spoke Life Cycles in Elmore, Ohio.

Scott Lang will lead the Ghost Pepper Riders. If you ride in his group, expect an average of 22 – 23+ mph. Are you ready for the challenge!!!

Bob Kayden will take out the Cayenne Pepper Riders at a slightly slower pace, 21+ mph.

Doug Kilpatrick will lead his Habanero Riders over the same 25-mile course at 20+ mph.

Todd Pollock will ride out with his Jalapeno group and will likely average 16 – 19 mph.

The Sweet Pepper Riders will be those who would like to ride at a more casual pace. My arm and shoulder are much better, but I will still likely have to take one more week  off from riding with that group.

The weather looks to be favorable for riding: sunny, WNW winds of about 10 mph, and a temperature of 80 degrees.

The Speedtrap Ride is a Toledo Area Bicyclists’(TAB) and a Flatlanders ride. It’s a great opportunity to ride with members of another club. So come out to Elmore! Ride some quiet country roads! Meet some great people, too! Sign-in begins at 6:00 in front of the bike shop. I hope to see you then!

    Saturday, July 16th

This is just a reminder that there will be no official TAB rides this coming Saturday, July 16th. On Saturday, Maumee Valley Adventurers will be hosting their annual Metroparks Tour, and it has been TAB's policy for some time to support MVA and its invitational rides. The ride starts at Fallen Timbers Middle School on Finzel Road in Whitehouse. There are routes of 15, 31, 62, and 100 miles. You can register on line at the cheaper rate until 11:59 pm this Thursday, July 14th. I hope yo see you on the road.

Speedtrap Ride Tuesday July 5th recap

Twenty-two cyclists came to Elmore last night for the Speedtrap Ride. The Ghost Pepper Riders, led by Dan Willis(substituting for Scott Lang) and the Cayenne Pepper Riders, led by Bob Kayden, rode out as one group. However, when they returned, Dan reported 22.3 mph for an average, while Bob’s group was slightly less at 21.9 mph. Doug Kilpatrick and Todd Pollock combined the Habanero Riders and Jalapeno Riders into one group of twelve riders. Todd reported 19.5 mph. Ben Durant and Claude Watkins were the only Sweet Pepper Riders. They reported an average of 14.1 mph.

After the ride,  several riders enjoyed cold watermelon furnished by Becky Kayden. Thank you Becky! A great treat on a 90-degree day!

Pictured is Jason Moore, looking very fit  after four years of intense training on and off the bike! Also pictured are Dan Willis and Bob Kayden, Mike Grillis and Dave Stover, and Ben Durant and Claude Watkins!

Please join us next Tuesday, July 12th, for another edition of the Speedtrap Ride. The long-range forecast does not indicate a day of thunderstorms, so it should be a great day to ride. Sign-in begins at 6:00 in front of the bike shop, and we roll out at 6:30 pm. I hope to see you then!

    Speedtrap Ride Tuesday July 5th

The Speedtrap Ride will roll out once again tomorrow, Tuesday, July 5th, from Spoke Life Cycles in Elmore, Ohio. The faster groups will ride the long route, 25 miles. Slower groups will cut off a little bit, and ride 22 miles.

The weather forecast is for a temperature of 90 degrees at ride time, a west wind of 10 mph, and a 30+% chance of an isolated thunderstorm.

Scott Lang will lead the Ghost Pepper Riders. His group will likely average 22 to 23+ mph. Are you up to the challenge?! Bob Kayden will lead the Cayenne Pepper Riders at a slightly slower pace: 21+ mph. Doug Kilpatrick will take out his Habanero Riders at 20+ mph. Todd Pollock should be back to lead the Jalapeno Riders at anywhere from 16 to 19 mph. I will still probably not be riding….A substitute leader will be needed for the Sweet Pepper Riders.

You may think that Elmore is farther than you would like to drive for a bike ride! Fear not….Elmore is only 22 miles from the University of Toledo area. That’s not farther than Whitehouse is from many sections of the metro area. It just seems farther away because it is in Ottawa County.

So come on out to Elmore and ride some quiet country roads. You’ll meet and ride with some great people, too! I will be there to begin sign-in at 6:00 in front of the bike shop, and we roll out at 6:30. I hope to see you then!
