Winter Warriors meet at Mountain Man Sports this Saturday at 9am for chili and a ride over to Ottawa Park. If the conditions allow, we will ride the Jermaine/Ottawa Park MTB trail. Our backup plan is to ride around Ottawa Park and then go out and back on the University Trail for a casual 22 miles.

Arrive early for the weekly prize drawing. Hope to see you there!

Currently DTE is closed and it appears unlikely to re-open in time for this week’s ride. Accordingly, we are changing the ride to GRAVEL ONLY and will be starting and finishing from the Chelsea Alehouse. Please see the updated parking and route links below.

If DTE opens in time for the ride, the option to ride or drive over will remain available. Thank you!

Departure at 9am from Chelsea Alehouse. As always, arrive a few minutes early to sign in and be eligible to win a fabulous prize!

With DTE being closed this weekend, we've decided to ride the Wabash instead. DTE will be postponed to a later date.

The Prelude to Suffering - come experience a taste of what you can expect during the Longest Day!

This is a 28-mile out-and-back on a (mostly unpaved) section of the Wabash Cannonball North Fork, with brunch at the 1/2way point.

Mountain and fat bikes fare best here, but feel free to ride whatever bike suits your fancy.

As always, show up early to sign in and register for the prize drawing.

We have gotten in some nominations for our annual awards, but we need more. We especially need members willing to serve as officers. No one has stepped forward yet to fill an open officer position. This summer, most of you rode with a lot of TAB members.  There must be some who stood out for you and who could be nominated for the Hubert Backes Rider of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and/or Most Improved Rider. Help single out those members who have made an impression this riding season.  At the voting site, you will find more information, including a description of the qualities nominees should exhibit for each award category.

Nominations must be submitted by Friday, December 20. After that, the site will be turned off.

Highlights from the TAB Ride Leader Meeting November 13, 2019

Nineteen  TAB Ride Leaders meet and discussed important issues over dinner at the Grape Leaf Diner this past Wednesday, November 13, 2019.   Following is a summer of the issues discussed:

    E-bikes

    • It will be left to individual ride leaders whether they allow e-bikes on their rides. Safety is the main concern here. The handling of an e-bike is not quite the same as a totally human-powered bike. Does an e-bike rider that shows up for a group ride have the skills necessary for riding in that group? If not, the rider should ride in a slower group to learn necessary skills.

    New Ride Leaders

    • John Wodarski will replace Dan Becker as a ride leader in the Sunday Breakfast Ride rotation. Thank you Dan for your great rides! Welcome John!  Doug Kilpatrick is considering whether he will definitely take over leadership of the Monday Whitehouse B ride. Thank you Nancy Beeman for all the years of leading that ride!  TAB still needs a leader for the 5fer Thursday Extra Spicy group and a co-leader with Linda Posadny on her Saturday Meandering Rides.

Safety was a major part of the evening’s discussions.

    • 1.    Riders in the back of a group must call out cars behind and make sure the message gets all the way to the front.
    • 2.    Riders should peel off the front one side at a time so that there are no more than 3-abreast at a time.
    • 3.    Report near misses of accidents to remind riders of the need for safety.
    • 4.    Remove any unsafe rider from the group.
    • 5.    All riders should call out errors.
    • 6.    Mirrors for better visuals are encouraged.
    • 7.    Riders must stay off that center line!
    • 8.    Groups of 20+ riders are discouraged.
    • 9.    Ride leaders might want to stay in the 3-4th position in line to monitor the group and to call out turns.
    • 10.           Ride leaders should feel free to let a rider know if that rider is doing something unsafe.

More discussion on these topics at the next Ride Leader Meeting in April!
