Speedtrap Ride Tuesday August 10th recap

Thirty-seven cyclists came to Elmore last night and rode in very hot and humid conditions with a heat index approaching 100 degrees.

Scott Lang and Bob Kayden led a combined Ghost Pepper/Cayenne Pepper group and reported a 21.7 mph average.

Doug Kilpatrick and his Habanero Riders to a 20.7 mph average.

Todd Pollock led a group of eight Jalapeno Riders with an 18.1 mph average.

I was one of four Sweet Pepper Riders. Kenny Shaw from the group reported 16.1 mph.

The first eight miles of the ride was a challenge riding against a headwind in the intense heat, but the return trip to Elmore was great!

Becky Kayden and friend Audrey formed the GLPR(Good Looking Pepper Riders) and rode down the North Coast Inland Trail and back.

Pictured is Hubert Backes, still riding strong even into his 80s! He is a regular on most TAB rides. The Speedtrap Ride is no exception!

After the ride, several gathered in front of the bike shop, and inside the bike shop(to avoid the heat) to enjoy for food, drink, music, and good conversation. Thank you Bob and Becky Kayden for furnishing “walking tacos.”

Please join us next Tuesday, August 17th, as we ride some of the quietest country roads of all the TAB rides. The Speedtrap Ride is a joint venture of TAB and the Flatlanders, and is a great way to ride with some great people! Sign-in begins at 6:00 in front of the bike shop. I hope to see you then!

    Speedtrap Ride Tuesday, August 10th

The Speedtrap Ride, one of America’s great Tuesday night rides, will roll out once again this Tuesday, August 10th, at 6:30 pm, from Spoke Life Cycles in Elmore, Ohio.. The weather looks to be favorable: temperature in the mid to upper 80s, and a SW wind of 11 mph. This will provide a tailwind on most of the return to Elmore. There is, however, a 20 – 25% chance of precipitation,  but that’s 75 – 80% chance of no precipitation.

Scott Lang will lead the Ghost Pepper Riders. His group will likely average 22+ mph. Can you feel the adrenalin rush yet?

Bob Kayden will lead the Cayenne Pepper Riders at a slightly slower pace(maybe): 21 – 22 mph.

Doug Kilpatrick will take out the Habanero Riders and will likely average

    20 – 21 mph.

Todd Pollock and his Jalapeno Riders will average anywhere from 16 – 19+ mph.

I will ride out with anyone who would like to ride at a more casual pace. We will be the Sweet Pepper Riders[last week our average was 15.8 mph].

After the ride, Bob and Becky Kayden will be hosting a gathering in front of the bike shop and will be providing walking tacos. If you plan to stay for the socializing after the ride, please bring a side dish of food to share.

Sign-in begins at 6:00 in front of the bike shop. I hope to see you then!

5fer Thursday Ride August 5th recap

Great weather brought sixty-seven cyclists to Side Cut Park Thursday evening for the 5fer Thursday Ride.

Jim Mazey led the Hot 1 group and reported an average of 24.1 mph. Thank you for leading.

Tim Eckel reported an average of 22.3 mph for his two-rider Hot 2 group.

Doug Kilpatrick and his Extra Spicy riders rode to a 21.1 mph average.

Rick Metcalf(substituting for Tim Prand who is on vacation) led the Spicy Plus group and reported 18.4 mph. Thank you Rick.

Jodie Petcoff reported an average of 16,7 mph for her Spicy Riders.

John Galdeen, leader of the GLR, reported a 12.7 mph. In his group, one rider pulled a trailer with a toddler. Toddler issues, as might be expected,  slowed the group considerably.

An interesting scenario occurred with the Hot 2 and Extra Spicy groups. The two Hot 2 riders waited at a stop sign for the Extra Spicy Riders to catchup, planning to join those Extra Spicy Riders. Instead, some Extra Spicy riders broke away from their group and joined the Hot 2 riders! You never know what interesting events can happen on Thursday evening!

Pictured is GLR ride leader John Galdeen demonstrating tire and wheel maintenance to Hector and Gigi. Also pictured is John with his “broken”[actually foldable] bike.

The 5fer Thursday Ride will roll out once again next Thursday, August 12th,

as Joe Peltier is planning to take over as ride captain. Perhaps I’ll see you then.

Speedtrap Ride Tuesday August 3rd recap

The Speedtrap Ride brought thirty-six cyclists to Elmore Tuesday night on what was an almost ideal weather riding evening.

Doug Kilpatrick and his Habanero Riders rode to a 21.4 mph average

Todd Pollock reported leading seven veteran riders at an average of 19.1 mph.

I was one of six Sweet Pepper Riders. We had a riding average of 15.8 mph.

The route was cut short by a little over a mile because of road work on SR 105.

Pictured(in red) is first time Speedtrap rider David Stoiber, who rode with the Sweet Pepper group. Welcome Dave!

Also pictured is a group of Jalapeno Riders. Looks like they’re having fun!

Come join me for the first TAB ride in August this Sunday, August 1st, 2021.  We are starting from Secor Metropark and not Wildwood.  There is a triathlon going on that I do not want to cross courses with.   We will meet at the Secor Center and roll out at 8:00 am for a 47.5 mile route. We will head to Oak Openings then to Delta for a snack stop. This is a no drop ride with average speed between 16 and 18 mph.

Tim Eckel led the Hot 2 group and came back with an average of 22.3 mph

John Galdeen, leader of the GLR(Good Looking Riders) reported                14.2 mph.

Pictured is Pete Piraino with his vintage 1983 Peugeot. Notice the down tube shifters!

After the ride, instead of immediately leaving for home, many riders stayed in the park for camaraderie with fellow cyclists.

For roughly twenty years TAB’s 5fer Thursday Ride has been one of TAB’s premier rides drawing large numbers of cyclists for a fun evening of riding. Let’s hope it continues for another twenty! Its next chapter will roll out once again next Thursday, August 5th, at 6:30 pm. Perhaps I’ll see you then.
