    Speedtrap Ride Tuesday August 9th

To all intrepid cyclists: The Speedtrap Ride, the best Tuesday night ride out of Ottawa County will roll out once again tomorrow, Tuesday, August 9th, at 6:30 pm from Spoke Life Cycles in Elmore, Ohio.

Scott Lang will lead the Ghost Pepper Riders. If you ride in his group, expect to average 22 – 23+ mph. Are you up for the challenge!

Bob Kayden will take out the Cayenne Pepper Riders at a slightly slower pace. He expects to average 21+ mph.

Doug Kilpatrick, leader of the Habanero Riders, expects to average 20+ mph.

Todd Pollock will lead the Habanero Rider group at anywhere from 16 to 19 mph.

Any riders who would like to ride at a more casual pace will form the Sweet Pepper Riders and will likely average 14 – 16 mph.

The weather forecast is a temperature in the upper 70s with a northeast wind of less than 5 mph. There is little or no chance of any rain.

As we come into late summer, the sun is beginning to set earlier than it did in June. All riders should think about lights for evening riding—not so much to see, but for others on the road to see you!

So come on out to Elmore. Ride some quiet country roads. Meet some great people. It looks like it will be a perfect night for riding. Sign-in begins at 6:00 in front of the bike shop. I hope to see you then!

And if you get at least one other person to volunteer with you, you can rotate Sundays! Please consider stepping up to lead a long-standing TAB ride. I hope to hear from you soon!

    Reminder to all…Saturday August 13, 2022

Just a reminder that there will be no regular rides of the Toledo Area Bicyclists next Saturday, August 13th. Why not? Because TAB’s annual Mad Anthony River Rally will be taking place on that day. Registration takes place with ride beginning and ending in Whitehouse, Ohio, Friday evening August 12, or Saturday morning August 13. You have the regular and Mad Fondo options.

Hope you are registered or planning to register. I’ll be working at one of the rest stops, so I hope to see you there!

This Saturday, August 6th is TAB's Pre-MARR event. All MARR volunteers are invited to come enjoy the routes with us, so you have the chance to ride it too. There will be two groups that will leave Whitehouse, starting just across from Cycle Werks. Rick Metcalf is leading the 62-mile route (think Adventure Ride pace) which will be departing at 8a. Roger Sweigart & I are leading the 32-mile route (think Meandering Ride pace) which departs at 9a so that we can all return to Whitehouse at about the same time. We will compare notes on markings and turns while enjoying a light lunch.

If you haven't yet signed up to ride MARR, we hope you'll consider joining to club for our event on August 13th and tour Northwest Ohio fully supported along the way.

The Roundabout is open - confirmed.

Girdham Road is rideable. It looks like it was chip and sealed?? Not sure of the correct term. Similar to Elmore Road on the Speedtrap ride. A little rough, but definitely rideable.

We are back to the original 5'fer route!

Now, the weather just needs to cooperate....

Speedtrap Ride Tuesday August 2nd recap

The Speedtrap Ride brought thirty-nine hardy cyclists to Elmore this past Tuesday, August 2nd, for what was a great night to ride!

Scott Lang led a combined Ghost Pepper/Cayenne Pepper Rider  group to a 22.4 mph average.

The Habanero group did not exist because riders normally in that group chose to either move up a group or down a group.

John Del Toro led the Jalapeno Rider group to a 19.1 mph average. Thank you John for leading this week!

The Sweet Pepper Riders rode a slightly shorter course. Ron Purk from that group reported an average of 15.5 mph.

Becky and Audrey again formed the Good Looking Pepper Riders. There were also four “Triking Cherry Pepper Riders”(on recumbent tricycles). Both groups did their own rides down the North Coast Inland Trail and back.

After the ride, several gathered in front of the bike shop for good conversation, drink, and pizza provided by the Flatlanders Bike Club. A great time was had by all! Thank you Flatlanders! Many riders stayed an hour or more well past sunset!

Before riders actually rode out, Doug Kilpatrick reminded riders how important it is to ride safely and to be watchful for anything that might go wrong. He also stressed the need for cyclists to stay to the right of the yellow line and to be on the lookout for motorists who could be a danger to cyclists. All of this in light of the cycling tragedy on the Make-A-Wish ride in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Pictured are first-time Speedtrap Riders Quentin Jensen(blue shirt) and Joe Parse(coffee shirt). Welcome to the Speedtrap Ride!

Also pictured are Rob Golden and Doug Kilpatrick in Spoke Life Cycles employee attire, pizza partiers, DJ Tony Mazurek and friends, and Ghost Pepper/Cayenne Pepper Riders on the road,(Photo provided by Todd Pollock, Thank you Todd!)

Please join us next Tuesday, August 9th, as the Speedtrap Ride rolls out once again from Spoke Life Cycles in Elmore, Ohio. I hope to see you then!

Bob Kayden will take out the Cayenne Pepper Riders over the same course at a slightly slower speed, 21+ mph. But last week his group topped 22 for the first time in a long time. Be prepared for anything this week.

The Speedtrap Ride is a joint venture of both the Toledo Area Bicyclists(TAB) and the Flatlanders Bicycle Club. It’s a great opportunity to ride some lightly traveled roads and to meet some great people, too! Sign-in begins at 6:00 in front of the bike shop. I hope to see you then.

Chris Murray was my special guest making the drive down to get some asphalt miles in after our excursion this morning. Shout out to Kailin and her photography: Hope you got my best side!

It was a great night for a ride and I tried to be a gracious host presenting choice pieces of fresh pavement and apologizing for anything that was below is standards. But it didn't matter as our rigs feasted to their satisfaction.

The breeze was so light that we rode 2 up the entire time providing an opportunity to chat and really get to know another rider discussing life, our place in the universe, the line and how we move it.
