In an exciting development, we have ride leaders for 4 groups. Douglass Kilpatrick Jr will lead the 20 mph group

Daniel Riley will lead the 18 mph group, Kenneth Shaw Jr. And David Justin Barret will cover any other groups that want to ride.

This Saturdays TAB Spicy Adventure ride will be departing from Cyclewerks in Whitehouse at 8 am. We will be rolling north through Secor Metropark and out to Metamora for a quick stop. Then back to Whitehouse for 48 miles. Our rolling speeds will be 18 to 22 mph based on the weather, terrain and group of riders. We will use the same route planned for last week. Except we will ride it backwards.

On the off chance the weather cooperates this weekend, the Meandering Ride will depart Whitehouse this Saturday, May 20th at 8a (meeting just across from Cycle Werks) for the 28-mile loop up to Secor Park and back that we planned for last weekend! Our route will average between 13-15mph, so you can expect some rolling speeds up to 17mph, but we adjust the pace for the abilities of the group that day. Bring a hydration and a snack for our short break at the park! Hope you can join us!!

    Mighty Cyclists,

We are looking at another GREAT evening for cycling on Thursday, 5/18. Cooler temps, dry conditions and moderate winds.

We will be beta-testing a new group for the next few weeks, Group 3.5 (Xtra Spicy 2/Bold Picantes - Beta Test Group)

    • Where Xtra Spicy has been pushing the 21 mph envelope, the goal of this group will be 20 mph +
    • This should be a good group for riders who may be struggling with Extra Spicy and too strong for Spicy Plus.
    • Rolling averages will be 20 to 22 mph + depending on the wind and group dynamics.
    • The goal will be to get stronger and more skilled at riding with a faster group. So you will be pushed at times.
    • This group is not represented in the online sign up yet.  If this works out and the group becomes "official" I will update the online sign up at that point.  Just sign up under Extra Spicy for now.

Please be signed in and at the starting point by 18:25 for pre-ride announcements.  With the extra group we need to have Hot 1 rolling at 18:30.

Remember you can sign in electronically at

Speedtrap Ride: Tuesday May 9th recap and Tuesday May 16th Ride

Last Tuesday, May 9th, thirty-five cyclists came to Elmore for a pleasant evening of cycling:

Scott Lang led his Ghost Pepper Riders to a 23.1 mph average

John Del Toro led the Cayenne Pepper Riders to a 21 mph average.

Doug Kilpatrick and his Habanero Riders reported an average of 19.5 mph

Todd Pollock led a group of six Jalapeno cyclists and reported a riding average of 16.2 mph

No report from the Sweet Pepper Riders.

Pictured are the Jalapeno Riders going against an easterly headwind. Thank you Todd Pollock for that photo. Also pictured is Nicole Reece in the kitten jersey. Several riders stayed in Elmore after the ride to celebrate Nicole’s birthday. Happy Birthday Nicole! Thank you John Del Toro for that photo and for the general ride report.

The next chapter of the Speedtrap Ride will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, May 16th. Cyclists will leave Spoke Life Cycles in Elmore promptly at 6:30 pm.

The same five groups will prevail! Are you ready for the Speedtrap challenge!

The weather for tomorrow’s ride is predicted to be even more favorable than last week: a temperature in the upper 70s, a west wind of 11 mph, and partly cloudy skies with no chance of rain.

Sign-in will take place once again in the bike shop, or out on the table in front of the bike shop, as I may not be in Elmore again this week. I do plan to resume my official role as ride captain next week, May 23rd.

    Mighty Cyclists,

It was a great day for a ride on thursday 5/11.  Warm with light to moderate winds made conditions just shy of perfect.

We had 73 riders sign in. 37 on line and the balance on the clipboards.  It was obvious that there were a "few" more than 73 at the start.  But, we had 73 sign in so that is the number that gets recorded.

It is IMPORTANT that you sign in for a few reasons:

    1. Legal - as everyone needs to sign off on the waiver
    2. Numbers and accuracy.  We need to know how many riders showed up.
    3. Emergencies:  If something goes south, If you don't sign in, how will we know who to contact?

What can you as a rider do to help us out?

    1. Sign up online:  https://toledo-area-bicyclists.ticketleap.com/2023-thursday-5fer/
    2. Get to the park Early!  I am usually at the park and ready to take signatures between 1730 and 1745

    Reported results

Group 1 (Hot1) - 24.1 mph.  Ben Groves willed his larger group to come in at a 24+ mph.

Group 2 (Hot2) - 22.6 mph.  Tim Eckel and his riders came in with a consistent result.

Group 3 (Xtra Spicy) - 21.4 mph.  Doug Kilpatrick had his group do their best impression of HOT 2.

Group 4 (Spicy Plus) - 18.1 mph.  Rick Metcalf came out of retirement and led a good ride.

Group 5 (Spicy) - 16.4 mph.  David and Mark had an influx of new riders to work with and reported all were receptive to advice and tips on how to effectively ride as a group.  Good job guys!

Group 6 (GLR) - We had 4 riders show up.  The group split into a 2x2.  Ben escorted a rider who was having issues keeping up and made it to the park safely.

    Regards,

    Joe "El Capitan" Peltier

    Speedtrap Ride Tuesday May 9th

The Speedtrap Ride, the best Tuesday night ride out of Ottawa County, will roll out once again tomorrow, Tuesday, May 9th, at 6:30 pm from Spoke Life Cycles in Elmore, Ohio.

The weather is predicted to be more favorable than last week: sunny skies, a temperature in the upper 60s, an ENE wind of 6 mph, and no chance of rain.

Regular ride leaders should be back:

Scott Lang and his Ghost Pepper Riders

Bob Kayden with the Cayenne Pepper Riderzs

Doug Kilpatrick and the Habanero Riders, and

Todd Pollock leading the Jalapeno Riders.

I plan to lead the Sweet Pepper Riders, but I may not be in Elmore until May 23rd.

The report from Rob Golden was that four riders rode last week in rain, wind, and temperatures in the low 40s: Tony Mazurek, Scott Lang, Rob Golden, and Doug Metzger. They averaged 20.2 mph. JoAnn Wegert rode separately. Thamk you Rob!

Sign-in will take place in the bike shop, or out on the table in front of the shop.

Pictured is Jalapeno leader Todd Pollock, from October 15, 2019.

Reported results for Thursday 5/4/23 (The Fourth was with us)

Group 1 (Hot1) - Ben reported an average 24.4 with no one dropped?  You can see his report on FB:

    https://www.facebook.com/groups/48899481811/permalink/10160879678426812/

Group 2 (Hot2) - Tim and his Hot 2 cohorts came back to the park with a 22.6 mph average.

Group 3 (Xtra Spicy) - Douglas wrangled a group of wild untamed horses that came back to the park with an even 21.0 mph average.

Group 4 (Spicy Plus) - Rick Metcalf came out of retirement to lead the Spicy plus rat pack and came in with an average of 17.8 mph if I remember what Rick told me post ride.

** We still need leaders for Spicy Plus. If you're interested, let myself and Chuck Nicewonder know **

Group 5 (Spicy) - David and Mark led a spirited group of 7 that came in with a 16.4 mph average.

Group 6 (GLR) - No report

47 riders signed in on the clipboards.  There were more for sure.  It is important that you sign in.  Just in case something "bad" happens. We need the information for communication and insurance purposes.

Some people inquired about on-line sign up.  The site is active and ready to go.  Use the following link to register online:

    https://toledo-area-bicyclists.ticketleap.com/2023-thursday-5fer/

The next ride is Thursday, 5/11/2023. Our predicted weather is looking optimal.  A high of 77 is predicted with mostly sunny conditions.  The wind is predicted to be out of the SSW at 6 mph with gusts to 10 mph.

It's the beginning of the season so some reminders on paceline do's and don'ts are always worth the review:

    • Do: ride smoothly and predictably
    • Don’t: swerve, surge, or brake suddenly.
    • Do: ride only as close to the wheel in front of you as you feel comfortable and safe doing
    • Don’t: overlap your wheel with the wheel ahead of you.
    • Do: Stay attentive and keep your hands where you can access the brakes if needed.
    • Don’t: use aerobars or positions that compromise control.
    • Do: Communicate hazards and obstructions!

That's it for now.  I look forward to seeing everyone this Thursday.

    Regards,

    Joe "El Capitan" Peltier
